What is Australia Day to You?

What are you doing with your Monday morning?

Australia day, normally I would be at a Triple J Hottest 100 party or hanging out with my husband at one of the Newtown pubs. This year however, will be a quieter affair. However, I feel like we will be spending out Australia Day celebrating what we think is great about this country. The opportunity to raise children in a safe and privileged country.

As we chill out by the water and enjoy our lamingtons and BBQ, we will be teaching our daughter about how we can make Australia a better place. Appreciation for our life, our family, our friends. Tolerance for those who are different from ourselves. Sharing with those less fortunate. Caring for others. Understanding that not everyone is as lucky. Respect for those who have suffered in order for us to live as we do today, whether they be the Anzacs who fought for our freedom or the first Australian who needlessly suffered.

I have to applaud Rosie Batty as the 2015 Australian of the Year! A domestic violence campaigner, and a strong woman who endured such a horribly traumatic loss so recently. I can not imagine where she finds the strength to support so many others through her own grief. A well deserved honor.

This Australia Day, I hope you all take time to think about what Australia means to you, whether its celebrating this great country or remembering the past. Lets make this Australia Day the start of a more tolerant, respectful and giving society.

Happy Australia Day xoxo
