Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier One review and GIVEAWAY!

Disclosure: I received a Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier One  for the purpose of this review from Baby Bjorn. All opinions are my own and are based on my experience with the product. This is not a paid/sponsored post.

One of my biggest purchasing regrets what I had the koala was not buying a good baby carrier. I bought a great pram and thought 'I wont be carrying her all the time so I don't need a fancy baby carrier, they all look the same.' A few months later I felt like an idiot.... I'd bought the worst carrier! It was cheap and supported neither of us. I had made two big mistakes in this purchase.

Mistake number one was thinking I wouldn't carry her much. I carried her EVERYWHERE, there's a reason I call her 'my little koala'. I go on a good walk every morning with my little koala tucked in her carrier, baby wearing is a pretty essential part of our daily routine. There were a few months in there too where she hated being in the pram, so I was wearing her all the time.

Mistake number two was thinking all the carriers were the same. They aren't. They really really aren't!

REVIEW

So with my two mistakes in mind, I bought the world's crappiest baby carrier, henceforth known as 'old crappy carrier'. Its painfully uncomfortable for me and unsupportive for her! A couple of months ago, despite my bub barely being 7kg I was about to give up the baby wearing. Then I found my new amazing Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier One. I have to say, its out of sight better than the old crappy carrier.

I've been using my Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier One for a few weeks now, I walk for an hour every morning and usually put her in the carrier for other outings too (its just easier when you have a clingy little baby). Comfort-wise it is so supportive. I love love love the big waistband, it disperses the koala's weight so all the pressure isn't straight down on my shoulders. The wide shoulder straps are nice a comfy, they are well positioned on my shoulders so they don't push down on those sensitive pressure points between my neck and shoulders (like old crappy carrier did! Ouch!) Note old crappy carrier in exhibit A... no waist strap + skinny shoulder straps = very sore neck and back!

As for the most important person in the baby-wearing experience - my little koala. She's also super comfy! You may think of the Baby Bjorn as 'crotch danglers'... that is NOT the case with the new Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier One, its designed especially to support bubs hips with a wide base and little zippy things that convert from mummy facing to outward facing. Importantly, it also ergonomically designed to prevent hip dysplasia. When the koala is facing me, her legs sit in a seated position, so its like I'm always getting a hug from her.. awwwww..... Old crappy carrier was a 'crotch dangler' and I felt awful every time I put the koala in it! It never seemed like it could be very supportive or comfortable for her. Poor bubby!
The hubby and our koala modelling the old crappy carrier and wonderful new carrier!

Functionality - it does the job and it does it well! I was close to giving up on baby wearing with old crappy carrier, walking down to the local shops was painful, let alone wearing her for more than 10 minutes. In the fabulous Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier One I feel like I could wear her for hours and there are so many different ways I can wear her! I love that I can wear her on my back and have my hands free to hang out the washing or prepare dinner without little baby hands in the way. I'm yet to try it out because she's still a bit little, but when she's a little bigger I am super keen to try the hip position. My koala loves being outward facing the most right now, the top of the carrier just flips down so she can see the happy world go by. Old crappy carrier was always in her face when she was outward facing which sadly led to a nasty rash on her face where the carrier rubbed, but no such problem with the Baby Carrier One!

I also love that it folds up easily so I can put it in the pram for when bubs had enough 'pram time', instead of being a mess of straps in the bottom of the pram. Plus it adjusts for different sized babies so you can happily put your small baby in it but it's also suitable for a toddler (believe it or not!) It feels nice and sturdy, the clips are strong and bub feels like she's secure.

I'm also loving the pretty silver design of my Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier One, although to be fair I'm slightly jealous of the giveaway carrier in Pear (Mint Green) - it is seriously cute! I love the mesh fabric, it feels like it'll be nice and breathable in summer and the silver colour is really versatile. If I had one criticism of the Baby Carrier One, its that I'm a pretty small person and when I adjust the straps so the koala is nice and snug, there is some overflow of the straps that hangs free and can be a bit annoying. That said, when my hubby wears it, he is much bigger than me (6foot 2 and broad shouldered) and he doesn't get any of the extra flappy bits, so the trade off is the it easily converts for different sized wearers.

To begin with it can also be a tad confusing to put on but I got used to it after a few wears and it helped to watch this Youtube video of how to wear the Baby Carrier One. Once you have the hang of it, you can easily put it on without help. Yay!

  1. Looks great. I seriously need a good carrier. I also got a not so great one and gave up. It gave me a back ache, and Alyssa never relaxed and looked uncomfortable. This looks fabulous though!!

  2. I was never much of a baby carrier but I suspect I had a crappy baby carrier too! So pleased you can continue on now you have a proper one to enjoy!

  3. It makes a total difference - I didn't use it much because it was crappy....

  4. I would love to win the Baby Bjorn carrier. I am due at the end of September with my second child. We are planning on baby wearing instead of buying a double pram. Our first attempt at baby wearing with our first born was an utter disaster. We purchased the nastiest carrier known to man (or woman) and gave up within a day. I was so disappointed as I know how important having bub close to you is to their attachment. We are determined to succeed at baby wearing this time and I've been told Baby Bjorn is the way to go. I am the first in my mother's group to have a second bub, so I'm looking forward to telling them all about the advantages of baby wearing a second child.

  5. This was the only thing on my wishlist when we had our first, over 17 years ago now. It came in handy with three under three. 2 in the double pram and the baby in the pouch, meant I could get out and about more.

  6. I saw a woman at the shops today and I swear the little girl in the carrier was 2 or 3. I don't know how that mum managed to carry her still!

  7. I bought a crappy carrier too and wished I had looked into a better one. Baby Bjorn was the one I wanted but I didn't want to spend the money because I thought I'd never use it. I'm definitely looking into a proper carrier for the next bub because I can imagine I'll have to do a lot of baby wearing with a toddler to chase after as well.

  8. I would love to win one as I wear my bub everywhere especially at the moment as we are travelling. Hubby and I have discussed getting a second carrier as he is over a foot and 5 inches taller than me and over 50kg heavier than me, he has also had 2 spinal surgeries so he needs support. Using one carrier between us isn't ideal. My lil bub also isn't a sleeper but she will usually have a quick doze in the carrier then want to look around, especially out the front, but is unable to as our current carrier isn't able to do this. Welcome to the great baby wearing world. Glad you found your comfy carrier - Rebekah-Jayne W

  9. I'd love to win this!!! I'm a busy mum with 3 boys under 5 and the pram is bulky and heavy! This would be amazing so that I can take my toddler out on his trike without having to push a pram. Not to mention having my baby snuggled up close to me - Hazel M

  10. With my 2 I think the carriers were not to flash, and they certainly weren't good for me. I really did not enjoy baby wearing, but really wanted Baby 3 will have to be carried I think, with one going to be in kinder and one in 3 year old kinder - I will be running around like a craaaaaazzzy lady! This looks so easy to use and I love the front and back facing options. Great!

  11. What a fantastic review and giveaway. I am a total fan of Baby Bjorn and I love this colour! I have to say we have used it solidly with both girls. Now with 2 kids I find I use it even more just to know they are strapped in so I can then deal with the toddler. I have been known to even go down the slippery slide with a toddler and baby in a Bjorn! Oh the things we do!

  14. My husband and I would love a Baby Bjorn carrier. There is nothing our little munchkin loves more than snuggling up close to her mum and dad. We’re currently using a stretchy wrap style carrier which has been good for winter as it’s warm but it doesn’t support her neck and gets uncomfortable for your back after wearing it for a while. It’s also not intuitive to put on so Dad doesn’t use it. As Evelyn is getting bigger and the weather is warming up we are looking to move to a more structured carrier that provides more postural support that both of us can use. I currently have bad tendonitis in my thumbs which is making using the wrap and increasingly painful experience. Yesterday I tried on a number of carriers in store and I can vouch that the Baby Bjorn is one of the easiest to put on. I was able to quickly adjust it and put Evelyn in without a twinge of pain. It also feels very comfortable to wear and the baby feels secure. We would love to win this one – the colour is gorgeous!!

  15. The Bjorn One is a big improvement on the old style. It's still not what is considered an optimal carrier but still a heap better than the original style. With outward facing, it's not recommended to do it before 6 months or for longer than 15 mins or so- it can be a sensory overload for bub and there's nowhere to snuggle in for a bit of a break. That's where back carries (esp high back carries so they can see over your shoulder if possible) come in- also they are much easier on you- outward facing not only puts bub's spine in a position that may become uncomfy for them (they are forced out of their natural spinal curve) but it also forces the wearer to hold their backs in an unnatural position- it can cause serious back pain! To use this carrier to the best of it's ability, use it inwards facing for little ones and do the zips up so their legs aren't dangling. Insted they have a wide, supportive seat that keeps their legs in an optimal position. Try to avoid the narrow base, leg dangly positions to keep bub comfy and keep pressure off their tailbone and pelvis. Sorry for the novel but this is a topic close to my heart <3

  19. I love how detailed your review is, and it is great to hear from someone's experience first hand what these are like. I would like to enter to win for my brother who is expecting his first child in the new year. He and his partner are only a young couple doing it tough and I am wanting to help them out as much as I can, but with medical expenses such as chemo I am limited on funds. I know he would love to wear bub around with him when he goes for walks along the beach or shopping, I know it will make his life easier too. I think it will also be helpful for my mum, it is her first grandchild and she is rather active so would be a good way to help everyone create some bonding moments.

  20. I would love to win this carrier because i have a 2.5 month old who loves to only be held and it makes doing things so difficult most the time and if its possible to carry and handle the housework as well as many other countless things then this would be a great blessing and gift for my arms, myself, my bf and as well as my baby. this would also be my first time to wear a baby so i would hope that it would come to being as easy as it sounds and ive read many times about baby wearing.

  22. I too have a 'crotch dangler' carrier and with bub fast approaching 9 kg and 6 months I am ready to give up. Each gram she gains I lean a little more forward to try and disperse the weight properly... soon I'll be the one crawling. Very sad since I love having bub close, and she loves a good hug too. One day she won't want a bar of cuddles, so I'd love to keep on keeping her close while i can.

  27. Carrying a newborn in Old Crappy was easy. "I can do this, no problems," I thought. "I will carry baby everywhere".

Now at 9kg, I'm rethinking. After an hour, my shoulders start to ache. I'd love something that redistributes the weight.
